Monotype Imaging Acquires Planetweb to Bring Enhanced GUI Capabilities to CE Providers
On Dec. 11, Monotype Imaging announced the acquisition of Planetweb, a global provider of embedded user interface software and developer tools for the consumer electronics industry. The acquisition allows us to broaden our value to manufacturers and developers of CE devices such as digital cameras, set-top boxes, high-definition DVD players and consumer appliances.
Planetweb’s flagship product is the SpectraWorks™ GUI platform, a hardware- and OS-independent suite of technologies for developing embedded graphical user interfaces quickly and inexpensively. The suite includes the SpectraBuilder™, SpectraCore™ and SpectraApps™ products.
SpectraBuilder is a PC-based design tool that allows designers to construct and customize GUIs through use of a library of “building block” components. Common GUI elements can be easily ported across product lines for consistent branding.
SpectraCore is an embedded systems library that runs on target devices and serves as the GUI rendering engine, providing control over the various GUI elements created through SpectraBuilder
SpectraApps provides a library of readymade and tested C-code applications with a set of functions that can be customized by an OEM or ODM.
For Monotype Imaging, the addition of these capabilities brings opportunities to work with new customers, pursue new markets and deepen relationships with our current customers. Our fonts and font technologies will be integrated into the SpectraWorks solution for designing embedded solutions that offer consistent branding across product lines, while delivering superior usability, clarity, style, portability, language support and an overall better user experience.
